Pliosaurs or Pliosauroidea was a suborder of short-necked plesiosaurs from Jurassic and Cretaceous Period. They were not dinosaurs, but instead were large marine reptiles. These carnivores ranged from 4-15 meters in length. When the giant ichthyosaurs of the Triassic, such as Shastasaurus and Shonisaurus, became extinct, pliosaurs became the top predators where as ichthyosaurs took the backseat. Pliosaurs ruled the seas preying on fish, squid, and other marine reptiles (plesiosaurs, ichthyosaurs, etc.) until the Mosasaurs evolved to take the crown.

Classification:Edit

Pliosaurs are classified as marine reptiles that share more in common with Pliosaurus (the type genus) then with Plesiosaurus. These characteristics include a large skull, a short, stiff neck, and conical teeth.
