Shonisaurus was a genus of ichthyosaur from the Norian Stage of the Triassic Period .

DescriptionEdit

Shonisaurus popularis was one of the largest marine reptiles of all time, measuring 15 meters (49 feet) in length. S. Popularis had a shout resembling that of a modern day dolphin. Interestingly, its flippers were longer and narrower that those in other ichtyosaurs. Shonisaurus is often depicted as having a deep whale-like body and a dorsal fin. Studies have shown that Shonisaurus, in fact, had a more slender body than traditionally believed. Also, most other shastasaurid icthyosaurs lacked a dorsal fin and what is more, there is no evidence for such a fin in S. poularis.

S. sikanniensisEdit

A second species from British columbia was unearthed and named Shonisaurus sikanniesis. At 21 meters (69 feet), it is the largest marine reptile known to date. However, phylogenetic studies on S. sikanniesis have cast doubts on it validity as a new species. It has now been assigned to the genus Shastasaurus .
